7 Best Strains for Beginner Growers

If you’re new to growing cannabis, you’ll want to put some thought into the strain you plan on starting out with. Cannabis can be difficult to grow, but some strains are much more suited to beginner growers than others. When you look for a strain, try to find one that is:

  • Resilient – Some strains are much hardier than others, and will be much more forgiving if you don’t do everything exactly right. As a new grower, you are going to make some mistakes, so it’s important to pick a strain that can bounce back from them.

  • Fast-growing – If you do something wrong with your plants, you may end up with a disappointing harvest. In that case, it’s better to get the first grow out of the way quickly so that you can troubleshoot and do better next time without as much waiting!

Beyond those two dimensions, your decision about which strain to go really just comes down to personal preference. Pick whatever you’ll enjoy consuming the most, as long as it’s also something relatively quick and easy.
Auto-flowering strains are generally the way to go, since they can be harvested earlier and don’t require you to manipulate the length of your grow room’s light periods. However, auto-flowering strains also run on a faster biological clock, which means you’ll need to hurry to correct any mistakes you make during the first 3-6 weeks, or risk stunting the plant’s growth.

Best Strains for Beginner Growers

Luckily for new growers, just because a strain is easier to grow than others doesn’t mean it’s inferior in any way. All of the strains on this list are great for consumption as well as being relatively easy to grow. In no particular order:

Green Crack

This strain was originally called Green Kush, but was renamed when Snoop Dogg himself gave it a try and compared it to crack after experiencing its powerful uplifting effects. The nickname stuck. This strain is an indica-sativa hybrid that has the energizing effects of a sativa, but the higher yield of an indica. It flowers in just 7-9 weeks. Unfortunately, Green Crack is only available as a clone, which can make it difficult to find.

White Widow Autoflower

Taking its name from the thick layer of frosty white trichomes it produces, White Widow is a visibly potent strain. It flowers after around 10 weeks, but the wait is worth it! It is also available as an autoflowering strain, which makes this one a great choice for beginners.

Blue Dream

This is one of the most popular strains in the United States, so it should be easy to find! Blue Dream is resistant to mildew and root rot, but its sensitivity to temperature changes makes it more fitting for an indoor grow.

Northern Lights

Northern Lights is a pure indica, and it is one of the most popular strains of all time. It’s a euphoric, relaxing smoke, and should be a relaxing grow, too – it’s a tough strain, and it flowers in as little as 6-7 weeks!

Blue Cheese

If you’re worried about your ability to care for a plant properly, consider Blue Cheese. This strain is one of the toughest ones out there, and in most cases can bounce back from mold, stress, overwatering, underwatering, and any other small mistakes you may make as you learn.

Gorilla Glue #4

Also known as GG4, this is a very potent hybrid strain that has won numerous awards. It tends to require less nutrients than other strains and grows wide instead of tall, which makes it a good fit for indoor grows. It flowers in 8-9 weeks.

Do Si Dos

A potent, indica-heavy cannabis plant with sky-high THC levels — grown from the mighty Do-si-dos feminized seeds.
They’re easy to grow, produce gorgeous buds packed with dynamic terpenes, and deliver dreamy, warm sensations that linger for hours on end.
